Abstract
Abstract: Critical interpretation of the readings assigned to or by lexicographers reveals a contradiction, i.e. the term is said to separate items that are on the one hand mutually exclusive, and on the other hand equivalent. Such a contradiction could not possibly have survived in most European languages unless there existed some implicit understanding of how to resolve the alleged lexical ambiguity of or in a given environment. A solution is proposed that maintains the essentially disjunctive quality of or when it distinguishes between equivalent expressions by raising it into a disjunction of two Different performatives in deep structure. The solution is justified in some prefatory remarks on natural language as a calculus. The contributions of Austin, Wittgenstein, and Frege are reviewed in this context.
